The police...there was a time when you could count on the police to save the day, to come to the rescue. Unfortunately this isn't true anymore. The police tend to show up only after the crime has been committed. Rarely are they there to protect you or your family. The show up when it is all over and write reports is about all they do. If your lucky they might catch the culprit. I'm here to tell you that I've had to involve the police on a number of occasions and they have never been of any use to me. Many years ago, my wife had (back then she was my girlfriend) moved to Ft. Lauderdale and she wasn't used to living in the city as she was from smaller towns. She left her purse on the front seat of her car in a K-Mart parking lot. When she returned to the car the window was smashed with her purse gone. The police filed a report but of course never captured the culprit. The report was useful for the insurance claim, that is about it. Another time we lived for a short time in Miami, about 6 months to be exact. One Sunday afternoon we returned home to find our house burglarized cleared of all electronics, DVD's, etc. The police came wrote their reports and looked for fingerprints. Did we ever get our stuff back? Of course not. We already were stressed over the Miami experience and that was the last straw, we got the heck out of there.
So what did I learn from those experiences and from quite a few other incidents involving police? They are useless as a protection force for the average citizen. They are good at cleaning up, filing their reports, etc. Even in cases of murder and rape very rarely do the cases actually get solved unless the criminals were idiots. Those are the bad guys who get caught. Not the smart bad guys, unless the police get a lucky break which is how most cases, that do get solved, are actually solved. It isn't like what you see on CSI or any of the number of other crime TV shows. If they actually used all the equipment and technology it would cost millions to solve each and every case. So what really happens are the the high profile cases get solved but most just slip through the cracks as another unsolved crime.
The police are overworked and underpaid and whats worse is they are mostly used to enforce a bunch of useless laws. In my opinion, police should be going after the bad guys, period! Instead they spend their time making all the politicians and self-interest groups happy by making sure that we wear seat belts, cross the street properly, drive carefully, make sure we don't ingest materials that may or may not be harmful to us, etc. Essentially they have become our parents on steroids to busy telling us what we can and can't do instead of doing the job they were intended for.
So..the reason I bring all this up is to help you realize it is your job to protect and defend yourself and your family. Keep a gun in your house, get a security system, train yourself and family on what to do if something does happen. Ask yourself what will you or the wife do when someone tries to jack you car while you are driving it. What will the kids do if they are bullied walking home from school? What about when someone decides they want in your house to take something that you worked very hard to obtain?
Scenario training is key and knowledge is key. Please don't waste time taking a useless martial art that is all about sport and competition. Street fighters don't care that you are a black belt. There are many stories abound of high level black belts who get pounded by street fighters. Not all training systems are created equals and usually street fighters and dirty fighters win the day. Find a self-defense instructor who teaches how to end an ordeal within a few seconds with whatever means are necessary. When exercising, train for functionality not pretty muscles. Incorporate endurance and strength training that allows you to run if you have to. Train with sandbags, sticks/staffs, kettlebell, and lots of body weight exercises. I recommend you check out DragonDoor.com where you will find many courses on this training. Also, focus on 'close in combat'. Most fights will end up on the ground so grappling and ground combat are king when it comes to surviving a confrontation.

Prepping Now, Not later
Prepping is a hot topic these days. With the new TV show on National Geographic DoomsDay Preppers and all the fears abound about the economy, terrorism, etc prepping is what it is all about. Prepping is about self-sufficiency, today, not tomorrow. Everyone plans and prepares for what happens in the future, but what you need to be doing is becoming self-sufficient now. The world may never end (I truly hope not) but bad things do and can happen. Take some initiative now, learn to be a hunter-gather, go fishing and clean and eat the fish for dinner. Grow some vegetables in the back yard, use containers so you can take them with you if you move. Go shooting, go camping. Take up a self-defense course, not a sport mind you, a course that teaches you to defend yourself not fighting in a tournament. Practice the skills now so that one day when you need them you are an old hand and knowledgeable.
One day, when you need them, you will have them and they will save you or your family. When your car goes off the road and you get stuck in a snow storm you will know how to make a fire and get through the night. The next time a hurricane comes through and you have to go with no power for a week you will be ready and able to feed the family. Prepping is not about surviving doomsday as so many people think. It is about surviving today and tomorrow no matter what comes your way. It isn't about being and living a paranoid existence either. We still live in a modern world with modern conveniences. Go travelling, go on vacation. Please don't block out the rest of the world turning your family into hermits. You can live and enjoy life to its utmost and always be prepared for the worse. Why? Because it is common sense. Don't be left holding the bag like so many people did after the 2000 computer bug everyone was so worried about. They discovered that life went on and the gave up so much of their lives. On the flip side though...be prepared so what happened to those in Hurricane Katrina or the Tsunami's in Indonesia and Japan does not happen to you.
Stay smart, stay prepared and live life to its fullest!

The Beginning
It all started back in the 80's. I was still in school and about fourteen years old. I was a survivalist and my fear was nuclear war. I lived with my family in the Florida Keys, Marathon, Fl to be exact. I was all alone in this, my family had no clue. I read everything I could and made plans on what I would do and how I would help my family if nuclear war came down upon us. I knew that we were in a bad spot as Miami was to the north of us and military bases in Key West were to the south of us. My plan was simply to take a boat and sail away from the mainland. I acquired books and knowledge from wherever I could find it. I ordered many books on survival as well as combat from Paladin Press and there was a local gun shop that sold me a bunch of used books on survival, combat, improvised weapons, etc On top of that, like most teenage boys I had dreams of joining the military to train to be special forces, that is of course if nuclear war didn't happen. So...needless to say, nuclear war never came about and I never made it into special forces. Turns out that I'm color blind and my vision sucked so they wouldn't let me into the program or even the army. Eventually I did enlist into the Army with a family doctor signing the waiver for me. I ended up in a military intelligence unit, not quite Special Forces but I did get some of that U.S. Army training I was seeking.
Thoughts of nuclear war faded away but I've always continued increasing my knowledge about survival and preparing. Most of my interests has been in martial art training, Bujinkan Ninpo brought to the world by Soke Masaaki Hatsumi to be exact, also known to the world as Ninjutsu (the real stuff with traceable roots) and I had the luck of having an instructor who was Australian SAS (Special Air Service, comparable to our U.S. Army Special Forces) trained so I learn much about combat survival, wilderness survival and so much more that I feel it is time to start teaching others what I have learned. On top of that I have spent years studying and mastering various self-improvement disciplines.
Now at the age of forty-three, with wife and children, I find myself thinking of survival and preparedness for real. With the economy the way it is and so many people unhappy with the government, add to that terrorism and the U.S. creating so many enemies in the world, one has to wonder if it doesn't make sense to be prepared, ready to survive anything. I don't truly believe we are headed to any sort of 'end of the world' event but disaster can happen at any time and any place. It would be wise and prudent to be prepared for any eventuality whether it is civil unrest, terrorist attack, financial collapse, super storm, earthquake or simply a home invasion or mugging as you walk the dog. This is the world we live in and it is highly recommended to be prepared. Just ask anyone who survived World War II Germany or civil war in Bosnia or if you could, those who did not survive.
As I look back through my life I realize how many 'survival situations' I have been through. I have survived hurricanes, forest fires, stuck in cold, snowy mountains, ship wrecked, and dealing with thugs in a park. My wife and I with our infant son lived in a van for a while, surviving by strong will and smart wits. No matter what has happened to us, we have always come out on top, maybe not always better off though. We have learned life always goes on, no matter what! With the right attitude and belief that all will be all right anything can be survived.
It is my goal, with this blog, is to help my readers and to share my knowledge about preparing and survival for anything from street survival to surviving war.
